Rolex Middle Sea Regatta 2019 – Malta
Having set sail for the first time in 1968 as a result of a rivalry between two members of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the Rolex Middle Sea Race celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018. Now a highly anticipated event on the global sailing regatta calendar, the Rolex Middle Sea Race brings the island of Malta to life each October, signalling a defining moment in the Mediterranean yachting season. Proceeded by the traditional warm-up Rolex Middle Sea Coastal Race, the famous regatta is organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club. It harbours a sense of goodwill, fun and friendly competition, as approximately 120 sailing yachts from 30 different countries compete for glory across a number of categories.
The regatta course
At an impressive 606 nautical miles, the course of the Rolex Middle Sea Regatta 2019 demands high skill levels and real teamwork to complete. Competing sailing yachts take between two and six days to complete the challenging circuit, which circumnavigates the island of Sicily – affording breathtaking views of Mt. Etna – before returning to Grand Harbour in Valetta, Malta.
