The Biscay Triangle Rally are now independently cruising South Brittany and working their way towards the English Channel. Some yachts have greater time to explore and cruise, others have to return to home ports within this week so there is a variety of cruising plans:
Argonauta reported safe arrival in Benodet on Monday evening after a good sail. The plan from there is to sail North of Finisterre on Tuesday when there is the prospect of South Westerly winds and reach L'Aberwrach, thereby giving them several different options for sailing back towards the East Coast.
Vertigo arrived in busy Sauzon on the island of Belle Isle yesterday afternoon and reported being rafted up 8 to a mooring buoy. They have cloudless warm sunshine in 26degrees C!
Misty and Shenanigan were heading for the island of Houat yesterday where they wish to have a re-run of last week's barbecueing and beach extravaganza.

The Discovery 55 `Kindred' (owned by Mark Phillips) and with Julia and Harry aboard has reported safe arrival in Benodet, South Brittany. They departed La Coruna at 0600am on Monday and were berthed up by early afternoon on Wednesday 4th August. In the latter stages of the passage they had to reef as Force 7 winds came in from the North West. Mark has to be back in England early next week - hence the early departure Northwards.

After Kindred’s extremely fast passage to La Coruna three further yachts (Mawari, Shenanigan and Vertigo) arrived in sunny Spain between 5.00pm and 6.00pm Friday evening having also experienced wonderful downwind passages from Torquay. Cruising chutes, spinnakers and code Os were the order of the day with average speeds of 7 knots for the 500 mile passage. The remainder of the fleet have all safely arrived by midday Saturday. A pontoon party this evening will reveal all of the 'tales of the deep' and tomorrow , apart for a briefing of the trip to South Brittany, there will be a tapas and drinks party in the Real Club Nautico in La Coruna.

The Biscay Triangle Rally started from Torquay yesterday in gentle Westerly winds and with the promise of slightly stronger winds filling in from the North West and staying in the North for the 500nm passage across Biscay to La Coruna. On Monday evening all participants enjoyed a `Departure Dinner' at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club, attended by the Chairman of the Torbay Council, Councillor Matthew Phillips and his escort Councillor Nicole Amil.

Now is the time to mention some important reminders regarding documentation for the Biscay Triangle. Rally registration will commence in the Committee Room of the Royal Torbay Yacht Club (RTYC) at 1.00pm on Sunday 25th July and will continue until 4.00pm and then restart on Sunday morning at 9.00am and run through to 4.00pm when the Rally Briefing is due to commence in the Corinthian Room RTYC.

The passage from La Coruna exceeded most expectations as the forecast headwinds backed into the West and gave most yacts a beam reach towards France. Shenanigan arrived off Houat before dusk on Thursday and were joined by others early on Friday for a day on the beach and a very successful BBQ.
Everyone arrived in a very busy La Trinite by midday Saturday and were thankful that berths had been reserved for the rally.

At 0800am this morning the Biscay Triangle yachts sailed from La Coruna for La Trinite in South Brittany. The first 24 hours promises to be somewhat tricky with Notherly winds of about 15 knots. Hopefully yachts will manage to get sufficiently far North by the end of the day in order to bear away for Brittany. The plan is for everyone to converge upon the island of Houat by Friday evening and then sail into La Trinite by midday Saturday.

NEWSFLASH!
First yacht into La Coruna after a fantastic passage from Torquay in 2 days, 22 hours. Kindred, a 5 week old Discovery 55, arrived in La Coruna at 0900am (local), this morning Friday 30th of July.
Mark Philips and son Harry were certainly on a 'high' after the fastest ever crossing of Biscay on the Triangle Rally.
The rest of the fleet is expected in port tonight.

Having peeped at the grib files for next week I am keeping everything crossed that the good Northerly winds that are predicted become a reality. Thank goodness it appears to be so much better than last year! This is what it currently looks like - click on the thumbnail to view a larger image.

The attendance of the Chairman of Torbay Council (Councillor Matthew Phillips) (aka The Mayor) has been confirmed for both the Departure Dinner at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club on Monday 26th July and for the start of the Rally at 1000am off Haldon Pier on Tuesday 27th July. It has become a rally tradition for the 'The Mayor' to visit crews on the dockside before their departure for Spain and then to bid farewell from the start line as yachts start their trip across the English Channel and Biscay.
